Paul-Jean Hérault (1936- ) is the Robert Heinlein of France, a master
of space opera and military science fiction. Hérault wiorked for French Intelligence during the Algerian
War (and wrote several acclaimed espionnage novels); he then worked as a journalist for several major daily newspapers
and the radio station RTL.
He began writing science fiction novels for Fleuve Noir's "Anticipation" imprint with Le Rescapé de la Terre [The Survivor From Terra] (No. 691;
1975) which featured his signature hero, Cal de Ter, a spaceman from Earth's future, who finds himself stranded
on a prehistoric world. Using suspended animation and advanced technology, Cal returns periodically to check on
his adopted world's progress, helping its evolution across the centuries. Another notable series was the adventures
of space pilot Gurvan in a warlike, overpopulated future. In total, Hérault wrote twenty-two novels for
" Anticipation", then four for Rivière Blanche, including Les Clones Déviants. In 2005,
Hérault received the lifetime achievement Cyrano Award for his works.
