An abridged version of the chapters making up the Prologue, the Count's Story and the Explorer's Story appeared in Interzone in January/February 1995 as "The Hunger and Ecstasy of Vampires". A version of similar length to the one that appears here, but with numerous slight variations, appeared in hard-cover from Mark Ziesing Books under the same title. An abridged and slightly variant version of the chapters making up the Writers Story and the Detective's Story appeared in Interzone in January/February 1997 as "The Black Blood of the Dead". An abridged and slightly variant version of the chapters making up the Soldier's Story appeared in Interzone in January/February 1999 as "The Gateway of Eternity". Brian M. Stableford has been a professional writer since 1965. He has published more than 60 science fiction and fantasy novels, as well as several authoritative non-fiction books.
