by Brian Stableford

"His kind lived among you from the very beginning, often seen but never properly observed. Your legends knew them, but did not fully understand them, calling them vampires, werewolves or elves, deeming them mere demonic spirits rather than patient neighbors. They inherited the Earth when your own species destroyed itself, by means of wars fought with the most terrible of weapons: plagues to which your cousins had better immunity than your own masters attempted to reserve for themselves."

If Copplestone had found a certain way to Heaven, I would not follow him; I would prefer to take another path, even if it were the road to Hell, in order that I might be the first to tread it."

I can see no alternative but to conclude that we might be living in a brief interval between the event that marked our species for destruction and the execution of the sentence; a moment of history that is scheduled for demolition, but retains meanwhile a shadowy provisional existence."
Sherlock Holmes.

From 1895, when the means of visiting the future through drug-induced "timeshadowing" is discovered by Professor Copplestone, to 12 million years AD, when the Universal Engine seeks to determine the cosmos' ultimate fate, the vast tapestry of time is the theater of a time war between the Overmen, descendents of the vampires, Humanity, and the shadowy intelligence that waits at the End of Time.

Sherlock Holmes, the great detective, Count Dracula, the reluctant vampire, the mercurial Oscar Wilde, William Hope Hodgson, freshly returned from the Night Land of the Great War, the visionary H. G. Wells, Alfred Jarry, Camille Flammarion, and many other figures from the literary firmament, become pawns and players in a conflict that spans the entire course of universal history.

Brian M. Stableford has been a professional writer since 1965. He has published more than 60 science fiction and fantasy novels, as well as several authoritative non-fiction books. He is also translating the works of Paul Féval and other French writers of the fantastique for Black Coat Press which also published his most two recent fantasy novels: The New Faust at the Tragicomique, The Wayward Muse and The Stones of Camelot.
